One of our favorite events of the year is National Night Out. We spent the evening with our volunteers handing out over 200 + harnesses, collars, leashes, brushes & even kitty collars to anyone who came to our booth! We were also able to scan pets for microchips to help them get registered. This is our third year in a row being able to help the Blue Island fur families out and we are honored to be able to do this for our community.

Come out and see us next year in August!

Meet our girl Paloma

Our first goal is to always reunite the stray dogs with their owner, if at all possible. Sometimes, there are barriers like lack of transportation or funds needed for immediate medical care. Paloma’s family has both obstacles.

Paloma, was brought in with suspected injuries from a car. She was seen by our vet immediately, where we learned she has a broken jaw and multiple puncture wounds in her head, more than likely from another animal. She is on the way to an emergency vet for medical treatment, and the costs will be far beyond what we can cover alone.

Paloma isn’t “just a dog.” She is an emotional support animal to a hearing impaired, special needs girl who recently had major brain surgery. The family jumped on a bus, rushing to pick her up. When Paloma saw her girl, both of their faces lit up! Truly an unbreakable bond!!

We’ve committed to getting her the medical care she needs so she can go home where she belongs: safe, loved, and healing with her family.

But we cannot do this without you. Every dollar makes a difference. Together, we can make sure Paloma gets back to her girl, who needs her most.

Update #2.

Paloma will be spending the next few days at home until her surgery appointment. She was sooo happy to be back home!

Our volunteers will drop Paloma off at Veterinary Dental Center in the morning, and pick her up in the evening. She was diagnosed with Craniomaxillofacial Trauma. Basically, a fractured jaw. The was possibly due to a combination of periodontal disease, and crushing injuries due to being attacked by another animal. Her prognosis is positive, as she was treated quickly with antibiotics to start the healing.

We have raised enough for 1/2 of the surgery, so we are still accepting donations towards her medical bills. We are a tiny organization, with a very small bank account. But after meeting Andrea and her dad, we knew we had to help. There is no way they could afford the surgery to save Paloma’s life. Too many times owners have to make the heartbreaking decision to euthanize their dog because of the costs. Andrea needs her dog, and Paloma deserves to have a happy, healthy, painfree life.

Donations can be made using our email address, blueislandstrays@gmail.com.

Zelle or PayPal are the easiest. If you’d like to send a check, reach out and we’ll provide the address.

Thank you!

Paloma update

The surgery went very well and Paloma was delivered back home yesterday (8/26/25)! The specialists at Veterinary Dental Center removed quite a few teeth, cleaned up all of the necrotic tissue, and repaired the damage to her jaw. She should heal nicely, and live a long, wonderful life!

Helping families in the community is one of our long term goals. With our non profit status, we can start looking for grants, and raising more funds to help those in need, along with our primary focus, our precious strays.

Thank you to all that have donated towards Paloma’s care, we have raised over half the cost of her bill! We still have around $1,800 to cover the entire procedure. If you could donate any amount, please do!

We had a very sweet & special morning October 3rd with the preschoolers of St. Barnabas School.

BISDP was chosen to participate in their 2025 service day. We spoke to the littles on caring for dogs & discussed some very important information about dogs. These little ones had some really great questions too! Highlight topics included poop, pee & bath time.

The 3 & 4 year old's made treat bags & bandanas for all of our dogs plus so much more! They collected all sorts of goodies for our pups.

Thank you to the staff, students & volunteers for inviting us to this very special day. It also happened to fall on the weekend of St. Francis, The Patron Saint of Animals.

St. Barnabas is offered pet blessings that day at the church!

We are so grateful for the incredible opportunity. I think we might have met some future rescuers!!!

When we were alerted to a possible animal neglect situation as seen by the first picture, our instinct was to involve the authorities, remove all the dogs and reprimand the owners. Was it hoarding? Backyard breeding? Sometimes a picture does not tell the entire story.

One of our volunteers made contact with the family and was able to get more information. It’s another story where dogs were not spayed/neutered, puppies were born. They got overwhelmed. We hear this time and time again. The cost of owning pets is expensive. Not just the food, but grooming and vetting costs have sky/rocketed. Those aren’t conveniences, but necessities. Especially grooming for long haired breeds.

After a few calls, a plan was put in place and we went out last night. We were able to remove 8 dogs from the home, which was all of the dogs living outside. They are well fed, but in need of basic medical care. These 8 barking, yapping dogs were kept at our kennels overnight thanks to our favorite Sargent Stone who always supports us! Precious Cargo Rescue Rides came by first thing the following morning and drove the pups to Border Tails Rescue!

There are 3 other dogs that the family was allowed to keep, which is the city limit. They truly love their dogs, but got into a situation they did not know how to escape from. There is will be no judgement from us. They did the right thing by surrendering the 8.

We are started a fundraiser to collect funds to get the remaining 3 dogs groomed, vetted, microchipped, flea/tick preventative and spayed. If you’d like to contribute, please click on the link. All proceeds go directly to the Broadway Trio! To donate, please see click the button bellow and in the comments enter "Broadway Trio."
